They say, “When you stare at the fire, the fire stares back at you.”
For me it went further — I danced with the fire… and I wasn’t sure who was leading.
In my early days, I performed fire dancing at wild raves and chaotic festivals, where the bass dropped heavy and the flames rose higher.
I had a full arsenal of torches — each routine carefully choreographed to music and motion.
I’d start my show with a flourish: torches spinning, flames flying, and the crowd roaring!
Then one night, in a blur of excitement and mispacking, I arrived on site and realized…
I had forgotten most of my gear!
No double staffs, no multiple torches — just one lone fire stick.
Panic flickered—but the show had to go on.
So, I lit that single flame… stepped into the circle… and began to move.
Slowly at first.
Then faster, and faster!
I let the rhythm of the rave pulse through me and let the fire take the lead.
That one torch, that single flicker, somehow captivated more than all my tools combined! The crowd didn’t scream less — they screamed louder!
They weren’t cheering for a prop show. They were cheering for the connection — between the flame, the dancer, and the unspoken energy flowing between us.
Since that night I have started every show with a single torch, so that the fire itself can get its well deserved applause before the guy behind the fire is really even noticed!
The main lesson I learned that night, is to never dance doing fire, but to instead dance with fire.
🔥 Sometimes I lead.
🔥 Sometimes the fire leads.
🔥 But always, we move together.
Because when you dance with fire, you’re not just performing.
You’re in a relationship — with something ancient, unpredictable, and alive.
I used to start my shows and do my best tricks first… though when I only had that singe torch I saw how people cheered for the Fire – not as much for the Guy behind the Fire.
I realized how deep a connection people feel to fire. They don’t even know it till they see it – though they sure do seem to feel it!
That’s the magic of fire dancing – seeing and feeling this connection that is happening between myself and fire – and between the crowd and the fire!
This spark of connection is what keeps me coming back — torch after torch, spark after spark.
